 Video Driver Needs Updating
Solution The symptoms you describe are usually a sign that you need the latest drivers for your video card or sound card; it's been our experience that installing the latest drivers gets the game running fine.

You get the latest video drivers containing the latest version of OpenGL the vendor supports directly from the video card makers website, for instance www.ati.com or www.nvidia.com. Sound drivers are also available from the hardware makers.

NOTE: The drivers are supplied for FREE from the maker of your hardware! Here is a website that should help you locate the latest drivers for your specific video card:

or

If you do not know the make of your video hardware, follow these steps to find out:

- Right click on My Computer (either in the Start menu or on your desktop; may be named "Computer")
- Select "Manage" from the popup menu (in Vista you may need to allow the process to continue)
- In the computer management window select the "Device Manager" item in the left column
- In the right column you should now be able to expand the "Display adapters" item (click on the + symbol to it's left)

This should give you the video hardware. There is also software that can help in both identifying the video hardware as well as providing the latest drivers. It's free to do the scan and get the list of drivers needing updated, which is useful because it also tells you where they are from (ie, ATI, nVidia, Intel, etc.)

(NOTE: we are not affiliated with UniBlue, but have simply found their product useful for our own needs. We are not recommending their software in a pro or con manner for you particular use or situation!)

Proper video drivers (ie, those NOT supplied by Microsoft!) speed up ALL of your graphics, including just web browsing or looking at files on your HD.

You may also have to update to the latest version of DirectX, available at no cost from:

IF UPDATING FAILS:
---------------
In some cases, installing the latest drivers for your video card may not work. Typically this is due to some Window's interaction that prevents the previous driver from being fully removed. Here are some suggestions that might help:

1. Try one these driver removal utilities:

http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-(Setup)-download-1655.html

or

http://downloads.guru3d.com/Driver-Cleaner-Professional-download-745.html

2. Read the article "How To Correctly Remove Video Card Drivers." at:

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=16154

3. If you still can't reinstall the drivers, you will need to start looking at the registry. At times at least one key required to be removed will be locked and therefore not able to be deleted. You will need to take ownership of these keys and subkeys and delete deleted the keys.

4. If you have two video cards, you may need to disable the secondary card so only one was active,  install the new drivers for the primary card, then repeat for the secondary card. Several reboots will be required and your desktop settings will be reset several times until all updates are completed. You probably want to disable system restore during this sequence as it can prevent the process from completing.
